Chainless Downhill 

Friday, August 6, 2021 5:00pm – 7:00pm

This unique event kicks off racing for the 2021 KA Bike Festival on Friday night! The course begins using the start gate at the top of the ski hill. The first half of the track consists of creative course taping that will lead riders to the start of Spirit’s blue level trail, Smorgasbord. The track will require no pedaling and allows riders to carry speed all the way down the hill! This course is intermediate rider friendly while challenging even the most skilled rider’s ability to generate and carry speed without the ability to pedal. Quick link removal tools and chain pin removal tools are available for contestants to use at the top of the course.

Sport Enduro Race (Short)

Experience the thrill of enduro racing on green and blue rated trails. Timed downhill stages are followed by chairlift rides. The course is set up to accommodate riders of all skill levels. The Sport Enduro race consist of two, timed stages taking place across select ultimate flow and intermediate tech trails. This event is recommended for riders who are interested in downhill type races that are not ready for Calculated Risk! Stay tuned for a detailed course map.

Open Enduro Race (Long)

Test your skills on Spirit Mountain’s most technical trails – all rated single or double black diamond! Four timed downhill stages are followed by chairlift rides and pedaling back to the top of the hill (riders pedal stages 1 and 3). The course is designed for experienced/advanced riders. Stay tuned for a detailed course map.

Partial Exposure Cross Country Recreational Race

Saturday, August 7, 2021 – 9:00am Start

Enjoy some of Duluth’s best flow trails in a 15-mile single loop course. The route takes place exclusively on green and blue rated Duluth Traverse trails and is set up to accommodate riders of all skill levels. The race begins at the Grand Avenue Chalet located at the base of Spirit Mountain. After a 5 mile roll out through west Duluth, the race shoots up Lincoln Park Drive and onto the Duluth Traverse. The course climbs up to the top of the Piedmont trail system and traverses over to Brewer Park. The highlight is the descent down the Keene Creek trail, one of Duluth’s premier flow trails. Still smiling, finish up the race on the Kingsbury Traverse back to the base of Spirit Mountain for some food, cold beverages, and live music! Although a GPS unit is not mandatory, it will greatly assist during the race. The racecourse is marker, but if you are not paying attention, you may get off course. A .gpx file of the race will be made available before the race. “Tokens” are collected during the race to verify a rider has completed all the necessary trails.

Northern Exposure Cross Country Race (PRO)

Saturday, August 7, 2021 – 9:00am Start

Get ready to test yourself on Duluth’s most technical trails! This 30-mile route covers every type of trail. From flowy single track to steep rock slabs, this course is designed for experienced riders looking for a challenge. After a 5 mile roll out through west Duluth, head up Lincoln Park Drive and onto the Duluth Traverse. The course climbs to the top of the Piedmont trail system, and this is where the fun begins – highlighting all of the most technical trails in the Piedmont area including DM, Skyline, Admiral Rockbar, and Merrit Creek! The course then heads to Brewer Park and touches on highlights like Kissing Booth and Casket Quarry trail. A flowing descent down Keene Creek and final push up and down Spirit Mountain bring you to the finish line. Make sure to stick around for the food, cold beverages, and live music! Pre-Riding the Piedmont area is recommended. This course is intended to be extremely challenging. Some riders race it while others ride it simply for the challenge. This route tests both your stamina and technical skills! Although a GPS unit is not mandatory, it will greatly assist during the race. Downhill Race (Advanced)

Saturday, August 7, 2021 – 4:30pm Start

The Advanced Downhill sends racers down Calculated Risk – one of the premier gravity trails in Minnesota. This high-speed competition course features numerous table-top jumps, rock gardens, gap-jumps (with optional B-lines), wide sweeping berms, and the flagship feature “The Terrarium” which offers spectators (COVID Dependent) the opportunity to watch racers sail down a steep rocky face culminating in a 5-foot drop at the bottom (optional B-line around the drop). The course is fully rollable but rewards riders willing to take to the air over some of the obstacles and rock gardens. Finish times generally range from 2-3 minutes for the 3,500-foot track. Full face helmets are required.

Youth Downhill Race

Saturday, August 7, 2021 – 3:00pm Start

The beginners course starts at the lower half of the All Weather trail, beginning in the large parking lot on the north side of Spirit Mountain. The course features a relatively gentle grade with wide open sections, traversing the ski hill on a packed gravel surface with smooth berms and rolls. The track’s length is approximately 1 mile with an expected duration of 3-6 minutes per ride. This course is beginner friendly for participants with basic mountain bike handling skills. We recommend any experienced youth riders who are looking for more advanced downhill riding partake in the Sport Enduro.

Kids Course and Kids Events

Saturday, August 7, 2021 – 10:00am – 4:00pm

Kids Activities Area Open (ongoing activities): 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Ongoing events include short obstacle courses and bike game activities. Kids can time themselves or just run the courses for fun! Try our a bike wheel gyroscope and feel the science of angular momentum.

Paint the Mural: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
All bike community members, kids and adults alike, are encouraged to add their own creativity to the KA Bike Duluth Festival mural!

Fire Department Water Truck: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Beat the heat with a spray from a fire truck! The fire truck is scheduled within this time period as available.

Bike and Helmet Decorating: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Kids will be provided fun supplied and have the opportunity to decorate their bikes and/or helmets!

Bike Parade: 12:30 PM – 12:45 PM
A chance for kids to show off their craftiness on their bikes and helmets.

Kids Strider Race: 1:30 PM – 2:00 PM
Short races on a relatively flat course. Strider bikes are great for basic bike beginners as kids use their little legs to push forward and stay balanced!

Kids “Downhill” Race: 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Kids will test their skills by weaving through a slightly downhill, hay bale course!

All times may be adjusted to accommodate the number of participants.
